Claude specifically: Anthropic makes it possible to turn off the use of conversations for training through account settings. But even with this option disabled, conversations are still stored for a period for security and legal compliance purposes.

Login credentials, passwords, and security keys: there is no good reason to enter this data into any chat program under any circumstances.

The practical principle: read the simplified privacy summary of the tool you use. Most now offer plain-language versions following European regulatory pressure. Five minutes of reading can prevent unpleasant surprises later.

In each tool you use, these settings are worth ten minutes of your time:
In Claude (claude.ai): go to Account Settings → Data Privacy. You’ll find the option “Use conversations to improve our models” — decide what suits you. Turning it off doesn’t reduce the quality of the service you receive.
In ChatGPT: Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone. Disabling this prevents your conversations from being used in training.
In Gemini: Gemini Activity settings — you can turn off activity saving and manage or delete stored conversation data.

Anonymizing data before entry: for many tasks, you can strip text of identifying information before entering it. Replace names with letters, sensitive numbers with placeholder values, specific locations with general descriptions — then reinsert real values into the output.
