Learn Indonesian in a Week: Your Practical Guide
Day 4: Food, Coffee, and Dining
Welcome to the “tastiest” article in this series! If you are in Indonesia, you are in a foodie’s paradise. Imagine 278 million people dining simultaneously across thousands of islands, creating an incredible diversity of flavors. From the famous “Nasi Goreng” to chicken “Satay,” you’ll need a few words to ensure your order arrives exactly how you like it.
Where to Eat? (Warung vs. Restoran)
In Indonesia, you will hear the word “Warung” quite often. These are small, simple local eateries that usually serve the most delicious and affordable authentic food. A “Restoran” refers to larger or international establishments. Let me show you how to start ordering your meal.

Essential Restaurant Phrases (Try saying them aloud)
| Indonesian Phrase | Pronunciation | English Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Saya mau pesan… | Sa-ya ma-oo puh-san… | I want to order… |
| Ada menu? | A-da meh-noo? | Is there a menu? |
| Minta bill / Minta nota | Meen-ta bill / Meen-ta no-ta | The bill, please |
| Tidak pedas, ya? | Tee-dak puh-das, ya? | Not spicy, okay? |
| Enak sekali! | Eh-nak suh-ka-lee! | Very delicious! |
Cultural Tip: The Right Hand and Halal
As Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, “Halal” food is available everywhere. The Indonesian word for “eat” is “Makan.” And remember: when eating with your hands (common in Warungs), use only your right hand, as it is a sign of politeness and respect.
The Fast Menu (Vocabulary that saves you)
Most Indonesian dishes revolve around rice. Here are the words you’ll see on almost every menu:
- Nasi (Na-see) = Rice.
- Ayam (A-yam) = Chicken.
- Ikan (Ee-kan) = Fish.
- Daging (Da-ging) = Meat (usually beef).
- Mie (Mee) = Noodles.
- Air Putih (A-yer Poo-teeh) = Drinking water.

A Note on Indonesian Coffee (Kopi)
Indonesia is one of the world’s largest coffee exporters. If you order “Kopi Hitam,” you’ll get black coffee. Indonesians love their coffee with “Gula” (sugar) and “Susu” (milk). Try ordering “Kopi Susu Dingin” (Iced milk coffee) on a hot day!
Exercise: Express Yourself
You are at a restaurant and want to order rice with chicken and water, making sure it’s not spicy. What would you say?
(Answer: Saya mau pesan Nasi Ayam dan Air putih. Tidak pedas, ya!)
